Fall 2017 Scholar-Athlete Essay Winners

OCT 9, 2017

CHAPEL HILL—Alyssa Wright of Lincoln Charter High School and Benjamin Ward of John A. Holmes High School won top honors in the eighth North Carolina High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete essay contest. Winners were chosen blindly by a panel of judges with criteria that included originality, content, organization, and grammar.

The NCHSAA Scholar-Athlete program is one of the Association’s most popular voluntary programs and recognizes excellence in the classroom as well as on the playing court or field.

As part of the program, the NCHSAA offers the essay contest annually, with student-athletes submitting a 400-word essay each semester. The Fall 2017 semester’s prompt asked had student-athletes to write about the different responsibilities they have as a scholar-athlete. One male and one female winner were chosen from the pool of entries.

Wright is a sophomore at Lincoln Charter who competes in cross-country and basketball.  In her essay, Wright described the multiple responsibilities scholar-athletes have that include, time management, and balance.  Another responsibility she wrote about was expectations as she described, “Most athletes that play for a school have certain expectations held by that school, and it is a responsibility for the athlete to uphold these expectations.”
Ward is a senior baseball student-athlete at John A. Holmes High School. The responsibilities of a scholar-athlete that Ward described were time management, leading by example and making sacrifices. Ward describes the responsibility of sacrifice as, “The biggest reward is when you sacrifice and keep your priorities in order to help the team to the finish line.  This means being responsible for getting things done in the classroom and on the fields…It requires discipline.”

The scholar-athlete essay competition female runner-up was Natalie Swaim, a senior student-athlete on the swimming and diving team at Tuscola High School. The male runner-up for the NCHSAA scholar-athlete essay competition was senior cross-country, indoor track & field, and baseball student-athlete, Owen Henry, from Holly Springs High School.

Congratulations to the winners of the eighth North Carolina High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Essay Competition.  Learn more about the scholar-athlete program here and look for the spring Scholar-Athlete Essay competition in April 2018!

CONGRATS KENNY!

CONGRATS KENNY!
Congratulations to Senior Kenny Schild on his verbal commitment to Methodist University in Fayetville, NC.  Kenny will be running XC, Indoor Track and playing baseball.  I am very proud of Kenny as I have had Kenny in the running family since 6th grade.  Kenny is a young man that is grounded in his faith and will do great things.  Kenny is also our first male runner to commit to run in college!

Ramble by the River RECAP

2017 Ramble by the River

Finally cooler temperatures for one of our team's favorite destinations to compete.  Bright sunny skies and crisp mountain air provided great conditions for some fast racing!

Men's Side
Senior Kenny Schild continues to move back into his old form with a very respectable seasons best of 17:45 just six seconds shy of his personal record from 2014.  After a very exciting week with his verbal commitment to Methodist University for XC, Indoor & Baseball he is keeping his foot on the gas peddle for a very successful senior season.  Curtis Hermes ran a seasons best/personal record and accomplished a major milestone in breaking the 18 minute mark giving the men's team three runners under 18 minutes.  Cutter Law ran a PR of 18:14 and Jonas Guffey ran a seasons best of 18:51 only 15 seconds off of his personal record of 18:36 set last season at East Lincoln.

The men finished a very respectable 2nd place behind 4A west power AC Reynolds.

Women's Side
After a month of battling injuries there are still some very bright spots on the ladies team.  Senior Emily Elliott ran a very respectable 21:30 only three seconds off of her PR.  Megan Minaudo continues to impress.  Her improvement/progression through this season has shown her grit and determination.  Megan will make a strong run at being the #1 girl on the LCS roster by seasons end.  Megan bested her seasons best/personal record by 50 seconds and ran a 21:45 moving her tied with Caity Born for second on the depth chart.  Sophomore Emma Lasarsky destroyed her PR with a time of 22:05.  Also interesting to note, Emma ran a 24:04 at the same meet last year as a Freshman.  Hard worker, determined, bought in, trusts her coach and the process!  Sophomore Alyssa Wright continues to impress and has worked her way into a seasons best/PR every race this year and 6th place on the eagles depth chart.  Emily Guffey set a new PR and Senior Grace Cary set a new SB time.

The women finished 4th out of 16 teams and 6 points ahead of 1A West opponent Murphy.

Hare and Hounds RECAP

Sorry for the delay on the recap...

2017 Hare & Hounds Invite

Men
LCS XC had a solid day at the Hare and Hounds Invite at McAlpine Creek Park on Saturday, September 23rd.  Drew Zink became the first ever runner at LCS to break the 17 minute mark in 5000m/5K in posting a personal record, seasons best, school record 16:39.16.  Drew also placed 3rd in a VERY competitive field of runners in the boys invitational race.  Kinser Hudson, Curtis Hermes and Thomas Cruz also posted personal records in the invitational race and sophomore Jonas Guffey posted a seasons best time as well.  The Eagle Men placed 6th out of 47 teams in the invitational division.  In the open race Swicegood, Wiltshire, Renegar, Tibbits, Wilz, Rhodes and Xavier Ward posted seasons best times and personal records.

Women
Our ladies had a tough race slot as the temperatures began to increase to make the race uncomfortable and very dusty.  However there were some high points with Megan Minaudo continuing to shine week in and week out with another personal record and season best time.  The Guffey girls had seasons best and personal records as well as Mackenzie Gavin and Alyssa Wright.

SPAC 1A Pre-Conference RECAP
